Nicholas D. Brauns is an associate in the San Diego office of Klinedinst PC. He focuses primarily on Transportation and Construction Litigation. Since joining Klinedinst PC, Mr. Brauns has drawn on his extensive maritime background to resolve a variety of cargo-related claims. Previously, Mr. Brauns has worked as a Marine Surveyor in Alaska , the Pacific Northwest, Northern California, The Mississippi River System, and the Gulf Ports. He was one of only a handful of North American surveyors certified by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) to inspect bulk cargo vessels for compliance with the Australian government's stringent bio-security protocols. Mr. Brauns has also represented the interests of shipping conglomerates such as the American Natural Soda Ash Consortium (ANSAC), and international shipping companies such as the Canadian PotAsh Exporters (Canpotex) when shipping valuable bulk cargoes to various ports throughout the world. As a surveyor, Mr. Brauns was trusted by multi-national shipping companies to perform a wide array of vessel, facility, and cargo inspections. He also assisted with casualty investigations for domestic insurance companies, and became accustomed to offering clear analysis of complex maritime issues during the course of litigation. His maritime background has allowed an easy transition into the field of transportation law. Nicholas has argued and won a number of key demurrers on behalf of Klinedinst PC clients, and has been heavily involved in contentious corporate litigation leading to sizable monetary verdicts. Mr. Brauns has conducted dozens of depositions, has significant experience in alternative dispute resolution proceedings, and has aggressively pursued and obtained sanctions awards in discovery disputes. Mr. Brauns received his Juris Doctor from the Washington & Lee University School of Law in May of 2008. While in Law School, Mr. Brauns worked for the Virginia Capital Case Clearinghouse, an organization that offered trial-level legal aid services to defense attorneys representing capital murder defendants in cases throughout Virginia.
