LEGISLATIVE/REGULATORY UPDATES

Minimum Wage Increase Appears Imminent

On August 21, 2006, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic leaders in the Legislature reached an agreement to increase the minimum wage in California by a total of $1.25 per hour by 2008. The minimum wage would increase by $.75 in January 2007, and then by another $.50 in January 2008, for a total minimum wage of $8.00 per hour. Although it is expected that Republican law makers will oppose the bill, it is likely that the Democratic-controlled Legislature will ensure the bill’s passage into law.
